Näin ollen työn tavoitteena on selvittää, mitä toiminnallisia vaatimuksia palomuureille on asetettu ja millä edellytyksillä pa-lomuurien toteutus puusta täyttää nämä vaatimukset.
This master’s thesis examines an apartment building constructed of CLT-elements (Cross Laminated Timber) in which the floor area exceeds the regulated limits. Because of this, the building has been divided into three different sections by two firewalls. In this situation the reg-ulations indicate that the firewalls should be built from a non-combustible building product, but as the building in question is a wooden apartment building the firewalls are also desired to be implemented as wooden structures. Because the planning deviates from the fire class require-ments of the building products, the firewalls compliance is shown by utilizing performance-based design and quantitative fire risk analysis in it. Therefore, the objective of this thesis is to clarify, what functional requirements have been set for firewalls and with what conditions do wooden firewalls meet the requirements.
First this thesis explores the laws and regulations set for the fire safety of buildings in Fin-land and the means of fulfilling the fire safety objectives. The thesis orients especially to the performance-based design process and to the methods, that are essential for this research, used in it. Additionally, the definition of a firewall and what functional requirements the defini-tion sets for firewalls have been clarified.
After familiarization on laws and regulations the thesis presents the wooden apartment build-ing and its firewall structure, which is also constructed of CLT, subjected to the case study. The performance-based design process is observed at the wooden apartment building in question, after which a fire safety design of the firewalls is presented along with the used methods and obtained results. As a part of the research fire resistance tests of the CLT-structure itself and the horizontal joint between the building elements have been executed.
In the evaluation of the firewall’s fire safety the CLT-structure is compared to two different implementations prescribed in regulations and instructions. These implementations, the com-parison solutions, set the acceptable safety level that the wooden firewall structure must meet. The evaluation is done in two parts, and it researches first the fire resistance of a massive CLT-structure and then the reliability of the firewall as a whole. From these the reliability of the mas-sive CLT-structure is determined first, and it is used later to evaluate the entirety in which the structure’s points of discontinuity and their effects on the reliability of the firewall are taken into account. The designed wooden firewall structure meets the requirements if it is, based on the evaluation, at least as reliable as the comparison solutions.
The performance-based design of the firewall proved that the wooden firewall structure is as reliable as the comparison solutions and therefore meets the required safety level. The fire re-sistance tests confirmed assumptions made in the planning phase and indicated that in a fire a CLT-structure performs above initial expectations. The testing of the horizontal joint between building elements demonstrated the way of implementing the joint so that it would have the same level of fire resistance as the CLT-structure.
Because of the case-specific nature of the performance-based design, the results of the evaluation presented are not valid for other projects. The possible impacts on the fire safety of the designed building caused by the practical implementation of the structure or changes in its design will need to be assessed when necessary.
