Tiivistelmä
Circular economy has emerged as a sustainable alternative to traditional, linear economy. Stakeholders from academia, business, and policy-making sectors are all actively participating in driving the transition towards circular economy. A key focus area within the circular economy is the management of nutrients, with particular attention to phosphorus, as a critical raw material. Phosphorus is an essential, non-substitutable nutrient for plant growth and is a finite resource, and yet the phosphorus cycle is far from being sustainable. Recovering phosphorus not only addresses the burdens caused by its runoff on the environment but also mitigates geopolitical constraints and economic uncertainties associated with mineral phosphorus supply. This research investigates the potential of implementing circular economy principles in phosphorus recovery across Nordic countries by applying state-of-the-art and systematic review, and a life cycle assessment study.
The findings of this study suggest that while the importance of circular economy is recognized by different stakeholders, several key areas of this concept are not sufficiently explored. There are several under-explored areas of circular economy research which need the focus of scholars to evaluate and even to integrate it into the geographical context. For instance, research and practices in Finland have not yet adequately addressed the unsustainability of the phosphorus cycle or possible solutions to it. Investigating secondary resources of phosphorus in the Nordic countries has revealed that there is considerable potential for phosphorus recovery in these countries. This could eventually tackle mineral phosphorus dependency and Baltic Sea eutrophication. Given the fact that sewage sludge is a significant resource of phosphorus, if the treatment methods fail to recover it effectively, this valuable resource will end up as threat to aquatic ecosystem via eutrophication. Therefore, a life cycle assessment has been performed to determine the environmental impact of four sewage sludge treatment case studies. The Life cycle assessment results indicate that a combination of anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis is the most sustainable solution. The biochar produced through pyrolysis holds significant potential as a nutrient source, which decreases the need for mineral nutrient production; it also poses a lower risk of contamination transfer to the soil. Pyrolysis emerges as an effective approach to treating the sewage sludge that ensures the resources stay in the economy and do not become pollutants in the environment. Moreover, it allies with multiple regulatory frameworks directed at phosphorus recovery.
Kiertotalous on noussut kestäväksi vaihtoehdoksi perinteiselle lineaariselle taloudelle. Sidosryhmät tiedemaailmasta, liike-elämästä ja politiikan aloilta osallistuvat aktiivisesti siirtymään kohti kiertotaloutta. Yksi keskeinen painopistealue kiertotaloudessa on ravinteiden hallinta, erityisesti fosforin talteenotto kriittisenä raaka-aineena.
