The subject of my thesis is the Hornwork Hessenstein, a fortification device built mostly between 1774–1777 and completed in 1789. The site is located at the southern end of the island Iso Mustasaari, on the sea fortress of Suomenlinna. In my thesis I present the history, the current situation and the future guidelines of the fortification. The aim of this study was to find out the stages of the building’s history, and to consider what kind of future would be the most natural continuum for it.
The thesis consists of three parts. The first part is a comprehensive historical analysis of the building, which includes research about the background, construction and modification history of Hornwork Hessenstein during the last 250 years. It also contains a survey of the current use and condition of the fortification structure. In the second part, I study the hornwork as part of depelopement of Suomenlinna from the perspectives of restoration history and as a World Heritage Site.
In the final part of my thesis I study the character and future of Hornwork Hessenstein. I analyze its spirit, the nature of changes in its history, and its values. Based on these, I am able to establish a framework for individual traits of future changes and use. Because the thesis does not include a detailed inventory of the condition and structures of the Hornwork, I do not propose detailed restoration plans for it. However, I do make a proposal for the necessary follow-up research and inspection. Finally, I propose a new use for the Hornwork, which is holistic, respectful of the fortification device and its history while promoting its preservation.
