In this bachelor’s thesis, we explored the role of multilingual young people, who actively use more than one language in their daily lives, in communication between home and school. Previous research and observations from the world of work suggest that it is common for a child to assist their parents with a foreign language, and sometimes even handle family matters independently. The aim was to investigate whether this phenomenon also occurs in communication between home and school, how common it is, how it affects the identity and daily life of the young person, and whether young people need support in these situations.
The study was commissioned by” Multicultural early childhood education, school and home association”. In their work, they aim to support collaboration between home and school and the development of the identity of multilingual children, as well as assist parents, among other things, in the use of the communication system Wilma used by the majority of schools in Finland. The goal of the development-oriented thesis project was to create a tool for the commissioner that meets the needs of young people and facilitates the organization's work in promoting collaboration between home and school.
The phenomenon of children linguistically assisting their parents was examined through seven concepts: multilingualism, integration, linguistic identity, child interpreters, family dynamics, collaboration between home and school, and children's rights. These concepts help to understand this complex phenomenon and its backgrounds from various perspectives. Data collection methods included surveys, interviews, and idea workshops.
The results of the thesis indicate that the phenomenon is perceived as a normal part of the everyday life of multilingual young people and that the majority of our target group does not find it more disruptive to their daily lives than any other aspect. Based on the results, a guide for multilingual young people was created. The guide addresses the phenomenon in a neutral tone, emphasizing its common occurrence, providing a legal perspective, and offer-ing tips for burdening situations.
In the final section of the thesis, we reflect on situations where the phenomenon may become problematic from the perspective of children's rights and the prerequisites for collaboration between home and school. In conclusion, children should never be responsible for the communication or collaboration between home and school. It is the school that is responsible for enabling collaboration and resolving challenges related to communication.
