Hiilitiekartan pohjaksi valittiin Science Based Targets (SBTi) -menetelmä.
The goal of this thesis was to create the basis for a carbon roadmap for Greenled Oy towards the carbon neutrality in the company's operations. The goal was to specify the definition of the carbon footprint in the company's operations and to create concrete proposals to reduce the carbon emissions caused by the company’s business activities. The carbon roadmap will be a tool for monitoring the emissions and setting more specific emission reduction goals.
To be carbon neutral, the company's operations should not increase the amount of harmful greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. The company must reduce the emissions caused by its operations, and what cannot be reduced must be compensated by other means. The Science Based Targets (SBTi) method was chosen as the basis for the carbon road map. The SBTi standard sets emission reduction targets separately for the Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 categories. If all companies were to reduce their emissions by the amount required by the SBTi, global warming would likely remain below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
It is quite simple for Greenled to significantly reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by converting the energy used by their locations into renewable zero emissions energy and investing in electric cars or other mobility solutions that reduce the use of fossil fuels. Scope 3 emissions are more complex because they are indirect emissions from activities or operations which are not owned or controlled by the company. However, there are possibilities to control these emissions, for example, by reducing air traffic, requiring better environmental responsibility for purchased components and services, and increasing the recycling efficiency and circular economy in the manufacturing.
