Tiivistelmä
Työn tavoitteena oli selvittää mahdollisia korvaavia kuitulujitteita lasikuidun tilalle komposiiteissa. Kuiduiksi valikoituivat järviruoko, paju ja kuituhamppu. Keskiössä on negatiivisten ympäristövaikutusten minimointi samalla säilyttäen tuotantoketjun kustannustehokas toiminta.
The goal of this thesis was to investigate possible fiber reinforcements as a substitute for glass fiber composites. Common reed, willow and hemp were selected as substitute fibers. The focus was on minimizing negative environmental impacts while maintaining the cost-effective operation of the production chain.
The work addresses the basic essence of composites and their manufacturing methods, as well as the requirements of the marine industry for these materials. The section on natural fibers includes an introduction to glass fiber, which is used as a reference in comparing the environmental aspects that emerged in the study. Organic fiber reinforcements are used to provide a possibility for lowering waste streams at the end of life of the composites.
The outcome of this thesis is an understanding of the current value chain of three different plant fibers in Finland and their potential to act as fiber reinforcements for composites. These fibers can act as degradable carbon storages in the context of composites and at the same time have a number of other positive environmental effects.
