The aim of the thesis was to create a method which can be used to examine the degradation of various biodegradable plastics in home compostors. The objective was to determine whether bioplastic bags decompose in home compostors and what happens to a disposable coffee cup during composting.
In the practical part of the thesis, the conditions and decomposition of samples in oxygenous Biolan Quick Composter 220eco and unoxygenous BioProffa Bokashi compostors were studied and compare. The work was based on standards EN 13432 and EN ISO 14855, which are used in industrial composting. The decomposition of samples was examined based on both visual changes and chemical restructuring.
During the experiments, the biodegradable samples did not decompose completely. From these results it can be concluded that especially the conditions of the thermal composter were not correct during the composting. The results of this thesis raise new questions such as wheather the composting time was too short and wheather all the supposedly decomposable materials actually did decompose. However, on the basis of the results it can be stated that commercial biowaste bags decompose at least partially in home compostor conditions.
