Nursing is a crucial element in healthcare provision which involves collaborative care, understanding, teamwork, hands-on and non-discriminatory despite age differences, culture, religion, and background. Often, healthcare professionals must revise their way of communication before and after care of the patients in the surgical unit to ensure that proper guidance and teaching methods is provided to the patient. The overall aim is to produce evidence-based knowledge that relates to the Preoperative patient education from nursing perspective in the surgical unit. Aside’s guidance and education, nurse do ensure that the patient understands what is being communicated to him/her before the care. It is upon the nurse to see to it that the surgeon responsible for the patient care is consulted and proper guidance is followed according to the doctors’ instructions. It is also a nurse responsibility to ensure that the patient understand the procedure which is yet to be performed and meets the surgeon who will operate on the patient. The researcher used the following questions to guide the study, what are the ways/reasons of empowering preoperative patient education? what roles do nurses play in preoperative patient education? And the researcher used Kanter’s theory of empowerment as a theoretical framework and literature review data collection was done through CINAHL, PUBMED, EBSCO, SAGE AND SCIENCE DIRECT and the outcomes of empowering patient education impacted to patients had less complication post operation, faster recovery period and satisfaction of quality care in general. The advantages of patient education are to educate the patient in having the right information, monitor the patient's individual progress and provide patient safety in general. Various clinical outcomes ranging from burdensome emotions like anxiety, fear and anger to positive emotions like hope and peace were experienced by the patients thus impacting their general health and patient education goals was made.
