Tiivistelmä
Digitaalisuus museoiden yleisötyössä on lisääntynyt räjähdysmäisesti viimeisen kahden vuoden aikana.
Digitalisation in museum public services has exploded over the past two years. The coronavirus pandemic closed the doors of museums, and museums around the world began to develop new digital services. Finnish Museum of Natural History also introduced new forms of digital public services in 2021.
This thesis was comissioned by the Finnish Museum of Natural History Luomus. During the corona pandemic, The Natural History Museum planned and carried out remote guided tours and a virtual tour in the exhibition Change in the Air. It was, however, unknown who used the services and how they perceived these services. The aim of the thesis was to produce information that can be used to develop new digital public services.
In this thesis, the customer experiences of participants in remote guided tours and virtual tours were examined. Two surveys were conducted, one for teachers who had booked remote guided tours and one for those who attended the virtual tour. Teachers who participated in the remote guided tours were interviewed. The persons who attended the virtual tour were first observed and then interviewed. The diaries kept by the guides were used to find out the prevalence of technical problems in remote guided tours and to compare the guide's and the client's experiences of remote guidance. Benchmarking was used to map other museums' ways of producing remote guided tours.
The main focus of the thesis was customer experience. The interviews and questionnaires showed that the remote guided tours met customer expectations, and the customer satisfaction was very good. Benchmarking confirmed the finding that remote guided tours can be implemented in many different ways and will continue to be in demand. The impact of the virtual tour on the willingness to visit the museum on site was significant. The observations show that the tours need attention with the clarity of navigation.
Based on the results of this work, two lists were made for Luomus. The lists include guidelines that can be used to develop remote guided tours and virtual tours and to ensure positive customer experiences in the future. These guidelines will also help other museums to develop remote guide tours and virtual tours.
