A traumatic event can leave an emotional and bodily engram in an individual. To understand how trauma can manifest itself in a person, it is necessary to explore the theoretical framework of experiencing trauma. The theoretical framework explains the background of the human behavior after trauma. Psychomotor physiotherapy focuses on integrating bodily and emotional sensations and memories to improve clients’ body awareness and control of the body.
The purpose of the thesis was to share information of traumatized clients’ experiences of psychomotor physiotherapy. The thesis is directed to the physiotherapists who specialize in psychomotor physiotherapy but also to other therapeutic professions who are working with traumatized clients. The aim of the thesis was to study traumatized clients’ experiences of psychomotor physiotherapy and to generate useful research results via questionnaire.
The subject of the thesis was assigned by the mandator. The study was conducted as a qualitative research project in collaboration with the mandator. The mandator’s clients who used psychomotor physiotherapy services formed the focus group of the study. Material was collected by using Webropol’s online questionnaire.
The research results indicate that the clients experienced changes with their feelings on safety, states of alertness and regulations of the levels of alertness. Clients also experienced improvements with their body awareness, control of their bodies, and improvement in the regulation of alertness. In conclusion, the research results indicate that psychomotor physiotherapy can improve one’s body awareness and control of the body.
