The aim of this thesis was to develop a low-threshold remote assistance model suitable for maternity clinic work, carried out by a Bachelor of Social Services (UAS) in cooperation with other clinic professionals. The partners in working life were health and social services’ child and maternity clinics in Pori, and the Future Health and Social Services Centre project. During the thesis process, a remote assistance model was designed and tested, targeting mothers with young children. The test group was sought from a Facebook group for lonely mothers. The aim of the testing process was to investigate the possibilities of remote assistance to improve mothers' coping in everyday life and to investigate the functionality of the service and discover possible challenges.
The remote assistance model was tested in practice by having conversations by phone with the testers during the summer of 2021. At the end of the testing period, a feedback discussion was held to investigate the experiences the mothers had of the service and the benefits of the service. Interviews, discussions and feedback conversations were not published directly in order to preserve the privacy of the mothers. The service was designed in cooperation with public health nurses from child and maternity clinics. The health nurses involved were interviewed at the beginning and at the end of the service's marketing. The thesis process also included studying maternity clinic work, remote assistance and loneliness through literature, blogs, chat services, discussions, and observation.
The remote assistance model was found to be functional for the testers and suitable for maternity clinic work. During the test period of the service, the mothers felt that they had received help with their coping and that the encounters had been genuine. The service was also able to provide guidance on services, as well as advice and instructions on the challenges of a relationship, child-raising problems, and reflections on one's own mental health. A challenge of the service development was the marketing of the test period at the maternity clinics because no testers for the service were found from there. Combining maternity and child health clinics with remote service opens opportunities for parents' long-term support, guidance, and genuine encounters.
