This thesis makes use of a school health survey conducted by the Finnish Institute of Health and Welfare in 2019 by considering the responses of 8th and 9th graders. According to the survey, about one in five upper comprehensive school age adolescents in North Karelia had had unprotected sex. This increases the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), as well as unwanted pregnancies. In addition, according to the Promote, Prevent, Influence — The Action Programme for the Promotion of Sexual and Reproductive Health in 2014-2020, published by the Finnish Institute of Health and Welfare, awareness of sexual health has impaired among adolescents.
The most common STD among the adolescents is chlamydia, with more than 16,000 infections in 2019. Although STDs are generally easily identified and treatable, prevention would be important since the infection rates are on the rise. An asymptotic STD spreads easily and can at the worst lead to decreased fertility if untreated.
This practise-based thesis was commissioned by the Finnish Red Cross. The purpose of the thesis was to provide adolescents with information on the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and condoms and oral sex protection and their choice, but also on pregnancy prevention and other methods of contraception. The objective of this thesis was to produce an information leaflet which discusses STDs, condoms and pregnancy prevention, as current guides provide information primarily on female-only contraceptive methods. The output remains at the disposal of the Red Cross. In the future, the topic could be explored from the perspective of the rainbow youth.
