Tiivistelmä
Opinnäytetyössäni pyrin tutkimaan erilaisia tapoja tehostaa 2d-kuvantuotannon
prosessia peliartistin näkökulmasta 3d-työkaluja hyödyntäen. Toinen tavoitteeni
menestykseen. Taiteilijan on tärkeä oppia tuntemaan kunkin työnkulun luontaiset
vahvuudet ja heikkoudet, jottei työprosessi vaan hidastuisi työkalun rajojen tullessa vastaan.
Tutkimuksesta yleisellä tasolla saatava hyödy jäi lopulta subjektiiviseksi jokaisen
taiteilijan työprosessin ollessa omanlaisensa. Tämän vuoksi keskityin kummankin
työnkulun hyödynnettävyyden analysointiin. Tällöin koottua tietoa hyödyntäen lukija pystyy itse tekemään tietoisen päätöksen työnkulkujen hyödynnettävyydestä
osana omaa prosessiaan. In this thesis I studied different methods of improving the efficiency of 2D-image
creation process by utilizing 3D -tools. The secondary goal of this thesis was to
answer the question, what could be gained by using a combined workflow as a
part of the artistic process. My research was focused on 2D -, 3D -, and combined
workflows while comparing their strengths and weaknesses. I analyzed existing
theory of the different processes and the workflows of multiple professional artists
while reflecting what I learned from my personal work. As a functional part of my
research I produced a background image for a visual novel -type game by utilizing
a combined workflow.
In my thesis I collected knowledge of the tools and methods to improve the efficiency of the different workflows while applying the collected knowledge for my
own work. My theoretical framework was based on web classes, books and articles, and the analyzing of work processes of different professional artists. I
started my thesis by focusing on both 2D and 3D workflows separately, continued
with the possibilities offered by a combined workflow, and finished with the functional part to apply the skills that I had learned.
A combined workflow can be an invaluable tool for an artist working in the field of
game production. Learning and combining multiple tools is an essential part of
the professional skillset required by the game industry. Just the basic knowledge
of each workflow can multiply the potential value of a game artist as a part of a
multidisciplinary team. A combined workflow also presents many dangerous pitfalls to fledgling artists. Just learning the tools is not a guaranteed ticket to success. An artist must also figure out the fundamental restrictions and limits of each
tool in order not to slow down their process instead to make it more efficient.
The applicability of the thesis’s findings remains mainly subjective as every artist
has their own unique workflow. I kept my focus on each of the different tools and
the variety of ways they can be combined to remove inefficiencies from the artistic
process. In the end it is up to the reader to decide which parts of the different
workflows they add to their own personal roster of skills and tools.
