Tiivistelmä
Tämä tutkielma on Turun ammattikorkeakoulun tanssinopettajan tutkinnon (AMK) kirjallinen opinnäytetyö. Tutkielma käsittelee tanssiesityksien saavutettavuutta näkövammaisille katsojille ja tarkastelee keinoja, joilla tanssiesitys voisi kommunikoida yleisönsä kanssa erilaisten aistikanavien kautta. Opinnäytetyön tavoite on löytää koreografisia keinoja, joilla tanssiesityksiä voisi tuottaa näkövammaisten erityistuen tarpeet huomioituina ja joiden kautta tanssin kommunikaatiota voisi kehittää.
This study is written as a fulfilment of the Dance Teacher Degree / Bachelor of Dance, at the Turku University of Applied Sciences.
This study explores accessibility of dance performances for visually impaired people and explores alternative methods of how dance performance could be communicated to audiences with visual impairments. The purpose of the study is to find a means to produce a dance performance with an awareness regarding the needs of visually impaired individuals. It also considers which choreographic tools might support visually impaired people and help to communicate with them when experiencing a dance performance, as well as to feel engaged in Finland’s dance culture.
This study has become the written result of the discoveries made from empirical experiment that were one of the source materials for the research. Specifically, the source materials used were the discoveries from the artistic choreography part of the degree, written theoretical research and an interview with the artistic director of Auraco Dance Theatre. The focus for the interview were the themes used for producing the dance performance of Auraco Dance Theatre which was made for the visually impaired. The author is reflecting on the observations found throughout the choreographic process and from the remarks that were manifested during the interview.
The accessibility of dance productions for visual impaired begins by getting sufficient level of understanding of how to create a performance in this context. This includes comprehending the diagnostics of visual impairment, experimentation of dance communication and co-operation with experts. Furthermore, it is imperative to undergo empirical research with the visually impaired and then explore these experiences with the choreographer and dancers so that they gain a greater awareness of visual impairments. The goal for achieving this is to guarantee a safe environment. It is also important to use a variety information channels when marketing a dance performance.
The author concludes that a dance performance is more comprehendible for the visually impaired when the visuals and aesthetics of the performance can be supported by communicating the dance through their other senses. Even dance performances that rely predominantly on the visual qualities can be made accessible to the visually impaired with the assistance of audio descriptions. As a choreographer, dance pedagogue or dance student it is important that we do not rely only on dance tools focusing on visuality, but that we also stimulate other senses as well.
