A premature baby is a baby born before the 37th week. A premature baby weighs in general 2 500 g. A very preterm baby weighs under 1 500 g and an extremely preterm baby weighs under 1 000 g. (Järvenpää, Metsäranta, Saarinen ja Virtanen 2018.) Globally the rate of premature babies ranges between 5 % and 18 % (World Health Organization 2018). In Finland the rate was 5.9 % in 2017, which means 3008 premature babies in all. (Gissler, Heino, Kiuru ja Vuori 2018, 9.)
Keskosperheiden yhdistys Kevyt made a membership survey in 2016, which indicated that health care professionals in maternity clinics and prenatal wards cannot tell enough about peer support and about Keskosperheiden yhdistys Kevyt. The aim of this development work was to make a digital guidebook which can be printed and given to families. The guide is intended to provide information on premature birth and on the care of a premature baby, and the guide is targeted to mothers at the risk of premature birth, to mothers who have given birth prematurely, and to their families. The guide contains information about peer support provided by Keskosperheiden yhdistys Kevyt and other similar associations, premature birth and its features. The purpose of the guidebook is to help families find peer support and get resources for their life situation and to help prepare for future childbirth and possible premature parenting. In addition, hospital staff and maternity clinics can use the guidebook when guiding parents. The aim of the development work was to find the most up-to-date information on premature birth, premature babies, and peer support for mothers and their families. The client organization of this development work was Keskosperheiden yhdistys Kevyt.
A topic for further study of this development work could be a research that would report on how much the guide has promoted the flow of information to parents about premature birth, prematurity, premature care, and peer support that is intended for families with a premature baby. Another topic for further study could be carrying out a research that looks into families' other children's experiences of a premature baby in the family and the implementation of the peer support they have received.
