The aim of this study was to find what kind of experiences children have had of institutional care. In this study we used a board game made by Socca and Osallisuuden aika ry. We used the board game to help children evaluate different sections of well-being by talking about them and by using emotion cards to describe how they felt about each section. The sections of well-being in the game were based on key elements of therapeutic residential care and elements of emotional and relational well-being. The other aim of this study was to find how the board game would work as a quality evaluation tool for child welfare institutions.
We used qualitative research method in this study. The study was conducted by playing the board game on two separate times. Both times we had two children and one worker from the child welfare institution. We also made a Webropol survey, which was sent to all children in the child welfare institution with the purpose of also finding experiences of those children who didn’t participate to playing the board game. The survey was anonymous.
Findings of this study conclude that the children are mostly happy with the quality of care they get in the child welfare institution. Children say that they have a feeling of being able to influence their own lives. The children also feel that they are safe in the child welfare institution and that they get enough support from the workers there. They also had a few things they would like to be improved about the institution. The things that needed improving were about workers explaining decisions, support for relationships with friends and partners and preventing institutionalization
