The purpose of the thesis was to streamline cooperation between occupational therapy students at JAMK and working life by developing the cooperation to a more student-centered direction. According to the studies mentioned in knowledge base of the thesis, studies in working life play an important role in the development of professional identity, and internships reinforce the learned skills better than traditional classroom work.
However, it is challenging to create contacts with working life, as there are several parallel pathways to working life. Moreover, the pathways are work oriented, which means that workplaces define the supply instead of letting students themselves define what kind of working life cooperation they would need to support their studies.
The aim of the thesis was to create a plan for a new student-centered tool for working life cooperation. The tool was named Vaihtotori because the idea was that it would be a two-way tool that would serve the needs of both students and working life.
The thesis was implemented as a development study. The data selected for the study included four working life cooperation pathways currently in use at JAMK (Elmo-intra, Future Factory, Jobiili and Tuudo) and nine Finnish projects aimed at developing working life cooperation in universities of applied sciences. The data analysis method used to review the projects was theory-driven, content analysis, which was based on a student-centred concept and the concept of functionality of the Person-Environment-Occupation –model.
Based on of the analysis of the data, both working life pathways and projects were found to be student-focused but not student-centered. The outcome of the thesis was a plan for a student-centered tool: Vaihtotori, which enables the students participate actively in the planning of their own studies.
