The purpose of this work is to find out how the practical work with the right of selfdetermination for people with intellectual disability looks like. This is done by first taking a closer look at the legal framework of self-determination and what type of ethical questions may arise when working with self-determination. This is done by interviewing staff members at a group home for people with intellectual disability.
This work describes how the staff at a group home views self-determination and how they take it into account in their daily work. The respondents have described how they work, how they help their clients to full participation, if they discuss ethics in their work group and if they think they have gotten enough information on self-determination.
The study finds that self-determination is deemed to be important by the interviewed staff members. They work according to their own best ability to take self-determination into account. No one of the respondents had gotten any information regarding new laws, their employer’s guidelines or had gotten to take any courses on the subject of selfdetermination, at least not since their own studies in the field.
