Tutkimustulosten perusteella hengitysharjoituksilla on tilastollisesti merkittäviä vaikutuksia parasympaattiseen hermostoon. Hengitysharjoituksista on selkeää näyttöä ahdistuksen aiheuttamien oireiden hoitoon.
One common form of anxiety disorder is the panic disorder. 1-3 percent of the human population suffer from the panic disorder at some point during their lifetime. According to the treatment guidelines, self-care plays a role in reducing the negative effects of this disorder. That self-care includes yoga, meditation and different relaxation techniques. These methods help in the prevention of panic attacks.
The purpose of the thesis was to examine how breathing training would help in the treatment of the panic disorder, and what physiological effects breathing training has. The aim was to increase nurses´ possibilities to use non-pharmacological treatment methods, for example, breathing training methods, in the treatment of the panic disorder. Another aim was to enhance the patients´ own possibilities to treat their panic disorder symptoms. The method used in the thesis was a narrative literature review. The data search gave seven studies. According to content analysis, the results were divided into two groups: 1) the benefits gained from breathing training and 2) the physiological effects of breathing training in the treatment of the panic disorder.
According to review, breathing training has a statistically significant effect on the parasympathetic nervous system. Breathing training improves breathing technique. It also improves mood and decreases anxiety. Breathing training may have significant benefits by decreasing the symptoms of anxiety and it is a cheap and easy way to decrease the symptoms. For this reason, breathing training could be more widely used in the treatment of panic disorder. There is a need for further research on the effects of breathing training in the treatment of the panic disorder.
