Indoor air temperature is crucial to amenity and the comfort of living. In addition, the optimal operation of a heating system has major financial significance. Impurities in heating networks result in irregular heat distribution, therefore leading to excessive energy consumption. Leaks, blockages, sound issues and other rotational faults may also cause problems. Impurities are often caused by corrosion, particularly in heating systems implemented with steel pipes.
This study explored the problems occurring in different hydronic radiator and underfloor heating systems, and how these emerge and can be located. Locating the problem is often a timeconsuming and difficult task. The aim of this study was to determine whether it was possible to make the task of locating the problem areas easier and particularly faster. A solution was sought for this purpose through thermal imaging.
The first section of this study presents different radiator and underfloor heating systems, the problems that occur in these, and locating problem areas in the networks. Basic information about the theory of thermal imaging and thermographic cameras is also provided. Finally, the study examines the suitability and, above all, usefulness, of thermographic cameras for locating problem areas in hydronic radiator and underfloor heating systems.
