Research ethics refers to the discipline of the professional ethics of researchers. Research and research ethics are governed by legislation in Finland. In terms of Master’s theses, the core of research ethics involves the protection of the equality, integrity and rights of self-determination of all persons involved. The aim of this survey was to examine the approach to ethics in a sample of Master’s theses in Advanced Clinical Nursing and Rehabilitation at the Universities of Applied Sciences. The material comprised 166 Master’s theses published online at Theseus in 2015–2016. The theses were analyzed and schematically grouped on the basis of, among other things, research method, ethical reflection and need of an ethical review and permission to conduct research. According to the analysis, 64% of the theses are based on a questionnaire or an interview study. Of the Master’s theses in advanced clinical nursing, 89% include an ethical reflection. A total of 4% of the 166 Master’s theses would have required an advance ethical review. The criteria and principles issued by the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity (TENK) serve as the foundation for an ethical review. There are deficiencies in terms of the TENK criteria concerning psychological strain. The survey results were summarized in tables by means of Excel worksheets and were reported using the pie chart. It is concluded that more education on the topic of ethics and its significance is needed. In the future, one sees an increased interest in internet surveys, where ethical standards often have not been completely carried out. The study is a part of the Arcada GROW project with the focus on contributing to the development of knowledge in research ethics.
