This Bachelor thesis investigates the Let’s Play culture on YouTube through the use of Uses and Gratification Theory (UGT). The main research question is “What are the reasons for watching Let’s Play videos on YouTube?” The data was collected through an online survey distributed to a sample of Finnish youth. UGT is based on the premise that people actively seek out specific media genres and consume specific content in order to meet individual needs or interests. The thesis relies on a range of relevant literature to present the theoretical structure, such as Introducing Communications Theory (West and Turner) and Mass Communication Theory (Baron and Davis). The survey method was chosen, and defined according to the work of Johansson (2010) in the book Metoder i kommunikationsvetenskap, Kapitel 3: Surveyundersökningar. The online tool, Google Forms, was used to create the online survey. It also allowed for data collection in order to create an in-depth analysis. The sample included Arcada University students studying across all disciplines. A total of 75 students participated in this research. According to the findings, the strongest reason for participants to engage in the Let’s Play culture was for entertainment reasons: to pass time, as well as for enjoyment and relaxation. The social reasons for watching Let’s Play videos was surprisingly low, almost to the point of being non-existent. The whole research process for this bachelor thesis took just over a year, from autumn 2015 to spring 2017.
