For several centuries, seafarers have navigated the vessels by using original paper charts. The first version of an electronic chart system was introduced about thirty years ago, which changes the way to navigate. An approved electronic chart system, which meets the requirements in the SOLAS regulations, is called ECDIS.
Our opinion is that ECDIS gets insufficient space in the maritime education. The purpose of this survey, was to find out if the ECDIS training is adequate or not. Therefore, we made interviews with a total of eight former students from four different maritime schools to find out what they thought about the ECDIS education they had in school.
The majority of the former students thought there should have been more ECDIS training during their education. It was only fifty percent of the students who thought they had enough training and use of ECDIS in school, that they felt comfortable to use the system.
Our conclusion says that the interviewed students do not experience that the ECDIS training is sufficient and a conclusion concerning whether the ECDIS training is adequate or not in the maritime schools, has not been possible to determine.
