Power training is a very current subject right now. Especially regarding training and rehabilitation
for older people. In the last few years power training has been investigated to
see if it’s preferable to traditional strength training when the goal is to improve physical
function in older people. The reason for this is the intention to involve more of the fasttwitch
muscle fibers in the training, because they seem to have more impact in ADL
functions than low- twitch muscle fibers. Fast- twitch muscle fibers atrophies faster and
to a greater extent than low- twitch muscle fibers. Power training involves more fasttwitch
muscle fibers than traditional strength training. The purpose of this study is to by a
systematic literature review summarize the newest research in the area and get a perception
of how power training affect muscle function and physical function. In the background
skeletal musculature and the division and function of the muscle fibers are described,
as well as the concept of power training and the structural and functional changes
that occur within the aging procedures. As a guide for the systematic literature review and
the quality check of the articles a method by Willman et al has been used. The literature
search resulted in 14 articles and two research questions were used to get the result. The
result revealed that power type training affect both muscle power and muscle strength and
many articles of high quality showed a positive connection of power training and improved
physical function. Despite this, there is yet not enough evidence to determine that
power training is to prefer when compared to traditional strength training. In physiotherapy
today training is one of the most common and most important rehabilitation methods.
That’s why this study is essential from a physiotherapeutic perspective. To improve rehabilitation
for the elderly we need to know which training method is the most efficient.
