The war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has created several different challenges both globally and more closely in Finland. In addition, agriculture has suffered from this crisis. This Master’s thesis was focused on the effects of the war in Ukraine on agriculture, more precisely on Finnish agriculture.
The empirical research of this thesis was started in the form of interviews, although, the data to the descriptive analysis’s were gathered by the questionnaire, which was sent to the target group of this thesis. According to the results of the questionnaire, the most significant effect of the crisis was the increase in the prices of agricultural inputs, especially in fertilizers, electricity, and fuels. Agricultural entrepreneurs seemed to adapt such strategies as retrenchment or exit to respond to this crisis. In addition, they seemed to be willing to adjust their activities by innovating. However, agricultural entrepreneurs were not willing to persevere their activities with additional financing.
According to the results of this thesis, profitability was important feature in responding to crisis and experiencing crisis survival. Profitability before crisis and at the time of collecting data had an impact which crisis management strategy the agricultural entrepreneurs have adapted to response to the crisis. As the profitability decreased, more adapted strategies were retrenchment, persevering with additional financing and exit. The descriptive analysis of innovation was not statistically significant, therefore, there was not relationship between profitability and innovation. In addition, the lower profitability led to the experience, that the prospects were weaker.
