Tiivistelmä
Tämän kandidaatintutkielman tavoitteena on selvittää kompensaatiomenetelmänä käytettävän biohiilen kiertotalousmallin taloudellista potentiaalia.
Varsinkin pienemmän mittakaavan biohiililiiketoiminnassa on paljon potentiaalia. The objective of this bachelor's thesis is to elucidate the economic potential of the biochar produced by using a circular economy model. The focus in this study is biochar in carbon offset markets. In addition, the economic development of the product is considered. In this study, a value chain for biochar is formed with the help of literature sources and it is utilized in the examination of potential and required scales. The carbon offset market and biochar as a product are treated from a perspective of circular economy. This thesis is aiming at assessing not only price depressing factors and the overall impact of the biochar production process on the national economy, but also the potential of the product based on secondary economic perceptions.
The climate impact of biochar has been scientifically proven, but a high price has become an obstacle to product’s success in the market. There is a lot of potential, especially in the smaller-scale biochar business. Its many positive environmental effects are particularly affecting the potential of biochar in the carbon offset market, in addition to its carbon sequestration potential. Based on this study it can be said that the various co-productions and combinations of uses could improve the profitability of the product. If the economic potential is considered based on the circular economy or alternative economic concepts, it would be significantly higher than when viewed through the linear economic concept. The market position of biochar could be developed, for example, through various allowances, regulatory facilitation or a focus on research and resource efficiency.
