Tiivistelmä
The amount and need for information that companies collect about their production is constantly increasing, and traditional business information systems alone are not able to collect all this data efficiently and process it into an easy-to-use format. For this reason, many companies have adopted a Manufacturing Execution System that has been developed to collect and manage information about the operational functions of production and to transmit it between the production shop floor level and the ERP level. Manufacturing Execution Systems are modular systems, so the customer can choose and pay only for the functionalities they need from the system. The purpose of this thesis is to provide information to the case company Normet on the current state of its production and to create a development plan for the introduction a Manufacturing Execution System in several plants.
This thesis is done using qualitative research. Literature review and workshops are used as data collection methods. The aim is to find out how well the current state of the Normet’s production meets the requirements of the Manufacturing Execution System, how the current processes and operating methods should be developed and how the acquisition and implementation of the system should be carried out. The development plan resulting from the thesis has been developed based on a literature review and an analysis of the current state of the Normet.
The literature review revealed that many companies have benefited significantly from the Manufacturing Execution System, but there are also risks associated with implementing the system. The results of the workshops showed that many of the challenges of the Normet are related to the low standardization of products and production practices, and problems with the flow of information. Also, the greatest benefits of the project are related to the correction of these issues.
