Tiivistelmä
Tämän kandidaatintyön tarkoituksena on luoda katsaus konesalien energiataseesta ja selvittää esimerkkikonesalien hiilijalanjälki. Case-tarkastelun avulla tarkastellaan konesalien eroja hiilijalanjäljen osalta. Jäähdytysenergian pienentämiseksi on useita menetelmiä, joista tehokkain vaikuttaa olevan vapaan ilman hyödyntäminen. Hukkalämmön hyödyntäminen on haastavampaa. The purpose of this bachelor´s thesis is to create an overview of the energy balance of data centers and to find out the carbon footprint of data centers. The case study is used to look at the differences between data centers. Based on the review of the energy balance, it is possible to determine the carbon footprint and the amount of CO2 emissions from operations. In addition to improve the energy efficiency of cooling energy and the use of waste heat are examined. There are several methods for reducing cooling energy and the most effective of which appears to be the utilization of free air. Utilizing the waste heat is more challenging. The carbon footprint of the data centers is reviewed from operations during the year. Based on the results of the case study, the carbon footprint of the data center located in Finland is much smaller than one which is located in Germany. In Finland it is possible to utilize cool sea air, which cannot be utilized in Germany. The data centers were similar in normal conditions and the only difference was the location. Based on the obtained results it can be said that in the future the role of improving the energy efficiency of data centers will be important to ensure sustainable development and operation. In the design of new data centers environment and the opportunities it offers to energy efficiency and waste heat utilization should be taken into account.
