Tiivistelmä
Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli selvittää vaihtoehtoiset tavat turpeesta luopumiselle Pursiala 1 voimalaitoksella. Pursiala 1 voimalaitoksesta vastaa Etelä-Savon Energia Oy (ESE Oy), jonka omistaa Mikkelin kaupunki.
Uuden laitoksen investointi on ajankohtainen 15 vuoden aikajänteellä. Rikinsyöttöjärjestelmän avulla turpeesta olisi mahdollista luopua jo aikaisemmin. The aim of this master’s thesis was to find out alternatives ways to end the peat use at the Pursiala 1 power plant. The power plant is maintained by Etelä-Savon Energia Oy (ESE Oy). ESE OY is owned by the City of Mikkeli. Pursiala 1 power plant was built in 1990 and its technical lifetime is 10-15 years for now. The powerplant fuel ratio is 70% wood and 30% peat. The current climate legislation and the impact of local peat production on the waters around the area have created a situation where peat will be abandoned as a fuel by 2035 at the latest. Lack of the peat as a fuel brings problems to the operation of the boiler, as the sulfur in the peat plays a significant role in clogging and corrosion of the boiler. When using 100% wood in the boiler the surfaces are blocked much faster and ash sticks more tightly to heat transfer surfaces. This causes a reduction in the efficiency of the boiler, and energy cannot be produced as efficiently as on clean heat exchange surfaces.
In this master’s thesis was investigated a situation that the heat exchange surfaces of the boiler were to be fixed looser than before. This idea, however, turned out to be an extremely valuable alternative, which would already bring the investment as valuable as the new power plant investment.
In the second alternative, the replacement of peat with elementary sulphur was investigated. In this situation, the wood should be fed more to the boiler to achieve the same amount of energy as peat is burned. Elemental sulfur is added to the woodchips to replace the sulfur from the peat. Similar systems have been built for a few, but no information has been explored about the system. This master’s thesis shows that it would be possible to construct elementary sulphur feed system for the Pursiala 1 powerplant.
This master’s thesis also includes the compared costs of the new boiler plant and the sulphur feeding system. The investment of the new power plant will be up-to-date within 15 years. With the sulphur-feeding system it would be possible to give up peat use earlier. If ESE Oy decides to invest in the sulphur supply system, it could be a good thesis topic for the next master’s student. This work could directly investigate the functioning and profitability of the system.
