Empiirinen osuus on tehty laadullisena tutkimuksena haastattelemalla kahta kohdeyrityksessä työskentelevää hankintapäällikköä.
The purpose of this bachelor’s thesis is to explore the ways in which the material or service to be acquired affects the procurement process. The theoretical and empirical parts of this thesis seek to obtain a comprehensive overview of the differences in the procurement processes of materials and services and the buyer’s procedures at different stages of the process. The thesis also focuses on the characteristics of materials and services that play an important role throughout the research. The theoretical part is based on previous literature and studies on supply chain management. The empirical part has been conducted as a qualitative research by interviewing two sourcing managers who work at the case company.
Based on the research, it can be stated that the object of the purchase affects its procurement process. The most significant differences in material and service procurement processes are related to the specification phase and the importance of the interaction between the supplier and the buyer. For services, both the specification phase and the interaction are more critical. The procurement process of services is considered more complicated and time-consuming compared to the procurement process of materials. The results show that buyers operate differently depending on whether they are purchasing a material or a service. The role of an internal customer in the specification phase is more emphasized in terms of services than materials. There is more input in the interaction between the buyer and the supplier in service procurement than in material procurement.
