Tiivistelmä
Tämän kandidaatintutkielman tavoitteena oli tutkia arvostrategioiden toimivuutta Suomen osakemarkkinoilta vuosilta 1996–2017. Käytetyt arvostuskertoimet strategian toimivuuden tarkastelussa olivat E/P, B/P, D/P, S/EV ja EBITDA/EV. Suorituskykyä arvioitiin koko aikavälin lisäksi nousu- ja laskusyklien ajalta.
Tutkielman aineisto pohjautui Helsingin pörssissä julkisesti noteerattuihin yrityksiin, joista oli saatavilla tilinpäätösdataa. Kultakin tutkittavalta vuodelta osakkeet järjestettiin tunnusluvun arvostustason perusteella kvintiiliportfolioihin, joista ylimmät kvintiilit edustivat arvoportfolioita.
The aim of this Bachelor’s Thesis was to examine the effectiveness of the value strategies in the Finnish stock market during years 1996–2017. The valution ratios used for examining the effectiveness were: E/P, B/P, D/P, S/EV and EBITDA/EV. The performance was evaluated over the entire timespan and also over rise and fall cycles.
The data of the thesis was based on publicly quoted companies in the Helsinki Stock Exchange, which had available accounting data. For each of the years under the study, the stocks were arranged on the basis of the valuation level into quintile portfolios, which the top quintiles represented the value portfolios. Performance of the portfolios were evaluated by raw returns and risk adjusted measures, which were: sharpe ratio, skewness and kurtosis adjusted sharpe ratio (SKASR) and 3-factor model. In addition, the significance of the portflio performance differences were tested for the SKASR and 3-factor model by statistical tests. Examining the value strategy performance was carried out by comparing the performance of the value portfolios to the other valuation level quintile portfolios and market portfolio, which was modified from the study’s data.
According to the results covering the entire period, the value porfolios performed mainly better on the risk adjusted basis by each valution ratio in comparison with the other valution level portfolios and market porfolio. However, the differences were not statistically significant at the 5% risk level compared to the market portfolio. The underlying performance of value portfolios was found to have a major impact on their tendency to perform better during bear markets. Based on the results EBITDA/EV and D/P were the most efficient valution ratios for the value strategy in this study.
