Tiivistelmä
The aim of the study is to identify how art education in ateliers in preschools in Sweden is framed and implemented. The preschools - ateliers in Reggio Emilia are role models for preschools in Sweden though some key differences exist. The focus of the research consists of three parts: the stage and introduction of aesthetic learning processes through activity and with chosen materials by the teacher, the work and strategies by the children responding to the teacher’s intention and if the content and layout of the ateliers is important to the creative works in the rooms. The intention is to illustrate the complexity of creative activities in the ateliers with the help of the three factors above.
The focus of the theoretical framework in this study is based on the central concepts like preschool atelier, processes of aesthetic learning, power configuration, language and child perspective. The empirics is collected with the help of video-camera and ethnographic research in seven ateliers located in five preschools. Several instruments of analyses are used in this study: for the role of the teacher - Interactive process-pointed perspective or perspective of conservation, for the children - about, in, with, through the arts, for the ateliers - communicative and/or controlling arenas, the room of relations and four aspectss of heterotopic rooms.
The results show that teacher´s use both perspectives by turns, sometimes in the same activity sometimes in separate activities. Almost every teacher in the study adopts a child-perspective in which they are listening to the children and provides the opportunity of creative works. In activities planned by the teacher they practice different ways of control, from substantial steering to more freely guiding. Learning about, in, with, through the arts can be identified in the activities with different results. On some occasions the children leave the room or they have their own strategies considering the activity. In other occasions their processes and ideas show and become the source to inspiration, support and communication with other children.
Communication and control can be found in activities stages by teachers in all ateliers. The children’s accessibility to the material depends on the teachers control of it and the relation between the atelier and the children depends on the accessibility to the room. This shows how the view of the competent child both varies and is missing in the teachers' approach.
