Tiivistelmä
During the summer of 1993 the Lumparn-fjärd and its connecting bays in the central archepelago of Aland, Northern Baltic Sea was investigated. The northern parts of the system consists of long and narrow bays. Many of the bays have thresholds at the entrance which affects the water circulation. They all have large draining areas. The investigated parameters were (a) hydrographical: Secchi depth, salinity, temperature and oxygen, (b) chemical: total nitrogen, nitrate, nitrite, total phosphorus and phosphate, and (c) primary productivity measured as chlorophyll-a.
The outer parts of the area were in relativly good condition, but the water quality was reduced towards the inner bays. Two of the inner bays had anoxic conditions and one had H₂S. The levels of nutrients, especially total phosphorus, were higher in these bays.
