Discrimination of serial auditory patterns in rats : roles of configural and elemental associations
In order to test whether rats could discriminate between tone sequences, food deprived rats were given appetitive discrimination conditioning with repeated ascending or descending series of musical notes serving as conditioned stimuli (CSs). The other type of tone sequence was reinforced as the other was followed by nothing. In Experiment 1, each series of 8 tones formed a 2 s cycle. The cycle was repeated six times so that the duration of the whole sequence was 12 s. In Experiment 2, the CSs were similar to those in Experiment 1 except that they started with a random note. As a result, rats could discriminate between the stimuli when the CS started systematically with the same note. When the starting note of the CS was randomized rats could not make the discrimination. Thus, according to this study, in a discrimination learning paradigm with serial auditory compounds rats probably form an association between the first tone and the US (or lack of it) but not with the serial pattern and the US.

Breathe out and learn : Expiration-contingent stimulus presentation facilitates associative learning in trace eyeblink conditioning
Waselius, Tomi; Wikgren, Jan; Penttonen, Markku; Nokia, Miriam (Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, Inc., 2019)Rhythmic variation in heart rate and respiratory pattern are coupled in a way that optimizes the level of oxygen in the blood stream of the lungs and the body as well as saves energy in pulmonary gas exchange. It has been ... -
Cardiac cycle and respiration phase affect responses to the conditioned stimulus in young adults trained in trace eyeblink conditioning
Waselius, Tomi; Xu, Weiyong; Sparre, Julia Isabella; Penttonen, Markku; Nokia, Miriam S. (American Physiological Society, 2022)Rhythms of breathing and heartbeat are linked to each other as well as to rhythms of the brain. Our recent studies suggest that presenting the conditioned stimulus during expiration or during the diastolic phase of the ... -
Intranasal oxytocin decreases fear generalization in males, but does not modulate discrimination threshold
Dou, Haoran; Zou, Liye; Becker, Benjamin; Lei, Yi (Springer, 2021)Background: A previously acquired fear response often spreads to perceptually or conceptually close stimuli or contexts. This process, known as fear generalization, facilitates the avoidance of danger, and dysregulations ... -
