Tiivistelmä
The aim of the thesis is to evaluate potential synergies between the maritime transportation sector and industrial carbon emitters towards decarbonization goals. The first step is to investigate the preferred green fuels being pursued by the shipping industry. The research is based on the collection of data from various sources, including inter-views, posts by companies in social media, organizational reports, and technical events.
Since the synthesis of some alternative fuels requires the use of CO2 as a precursor, the establishment of industrial synergies, directly or indirectly, could enable the expansion of a green fuel market. This will, however, depend on key factors such as the availability of affordable green electricity and the successful deployment of carbon capture and utilization technologies. To support such effort, engaging policies will be indispensable to incentivize the industrial actors.
Based on the research findings, there should be a scenario where multiple green fuels will be available to truly enable the decarbonization of the shipping industry. These fuels would be produced in different geographic locations, through different processes, using different feedstocks. Therefore, it is reasonable to state that e- fuels could play a role in the future of the maritime transportation sector.
