The project-based thesis is written in collaboration with Alumni of the Diaconia University of Applied Sciences. The aim of the thesis was to motivate alumni participation through online seminars in career guidance and mentoring program of the Diaconia University.
Mentoring programs can support students in their studies, networking and finding career paths. However, it is challenging to find someone who can guide and motivate to strive harder, especially on voluntary basis.
It is difficult to implement a mentoring program without mentors. The goal of the seminar series was to create a platform for final year students and alumni to interact, exchange knowledge, and encourage involvement in the DIAK mentor and career guidance program.
There were two objectives in this project. The first objective was to organise two online seminars to promote the existing mentoring and career guidance program to the alumni and the graduating students of the Degree in Social Services. The second objective was to create awareness of the mentoring and career guidance program and encourage the DIAK alumni to participate.
The project has followed the developmental phase from planning to evaluation of the project. The project was evaluated by using the SMART evaluation, work life partner evaluation, self-evaluation and participants’ evaluation utilising the feedback forms sent to them after each seminar. It can be said that the project is relevant, timely, and beneficial to DSS students in helping them in looking for work placement, establish the right networks, and find suitable jobs after graduation. Based on the results and evaluation, the project's aims and objectives were accomplished.
Thus, the project was beneficial and online seminars have proven to be useful especially when working with alumni and students who do not have much free time. It is recommended for the Work Life partner to continue organising more seminars/gatherings as an efficient and effective way to recruit mentors and mentees for the mentoring programme.
