This development project is an arts-based action research as well as an artistic intervention. The data for this research was collected from workshops that utilised arts-based methods and the principles of service design. The workshops were held remotely in Tampere in autumn 2021 for the members of the working party piloting culture on prescription model. The aim of the workshops was to facilitate the preparation of culture on prescription model. The workshops were recorded, and the researcher used the recordings, feedback gathered from the workshops as well as work diaries as research materials. The collaborators were Sointu Senioripalvelut (a society offering housing and well-being services for the elderly) and the city of Tampere. The workshops were designed together with a community-based artist from Sointu Senioripalvelut and a planner of the city of Tampere utilising the principles of co-creation.
The aim of the development project was to gather information on whether it is possible to facilitate the work of an interdisciplinary working party by utilising arts-based methods and the principles of service design. The second aim was to observe the expertise of the researcher in the arts and health field.
The source materials of the development project included a wide variety of books and online materials of experts on applied arts, interdisciplinary collaboration, creative well-being as well as service design. The research was based on a holistic view of humans and a phenomenological-hermeneutical research method.
The results of the development project showed that the objectives for the workshops were indisputably accomplished. Arts-based methods and the principles of service design that were utilised in the workshops accelerated the development of the pilot of the culture on prescription model and showed that there were several matters that needed to be addressed during the process. The added value that arts brought to the research was considered to be substantial because the workshops showed that there were many issues that could not be foreseen in the beginning of the development project. In addition, the results showed that education in the arts and health field should be further developed. Introducing the theory and principles of co-creation and service design to the experts and facilitators of creative well-being would be productive.
In this development project, the researcher examined her expertise in the arts and health field. As a result, the researcher discovered, that in her work, she takes the roles of a cultural midwife, an artist-creator, and an expert in creative well-being. The researcher will continue developing a working model for an interdisciplinary working party based on the collected data.
