Jatkokehitysideana
pohdittiin eri kulttuurien huomioimista palliatiivisessa hoitotyössä, sillä ulkomaalaistaustainen väestö lisääntyy. In the future, the need for palliative care increases as the population ages and the number of chronic illnesses increases. Palliative care is holistic care of a patients with an incurable illness. The aim is to support the quality of life in patients and their close ones. As a nurse, you can encounter patients needing palliative care in many healthcare units,
therefore, competence in palliative care is necessary. Palliative care requires that the
nurse is able to be present and encounter the patients and their close ones unhurriedly
and with dignity.
This practice-based thesis was commissioned by Karelia University of Applied Sciences.
The aim of this thesis was to increase nursing students’ confidence to encounter palliative care patients and their close ones. The objective of this thesis was to create a video
to stimulate discussion on how to encounter a patients and their close ones in the palliative care phase.
The concept and principles of palliative care and encountering patients and their close
ones were defined in the framework of this thesis. The main issues about encountering
patients and their close ones are presented on the video with the help of the theory
base. Nursing students thought the video was useful and most of them received new
perspectives on how to encounter patients receiving palliative care. Since the number of
people of foreign background is increasing, encountering different cultures in palliative
care could be an idea for further development.
