Jatkokehitysideanamme on oppaan harjoitteiden tarkoituksenmukaisuuden, tuloksellisuuden ja käytettävyyden tutkiminen kohderyhmässä During pregnancy and after childbirth, the woman’s musculoskeletal system goes
through several changes that affect practising riding. The posture control of the rider and
the interaction between the rider and the horse is based on the rider’s stability and
control of mid-body and pelvic area. The topic arose from the need of riding women to
receive counselling and guidance based on scientific knowledge for practising riding
during and after pregnancy.
This practise-based thesis was based on a literature review and a qualitative
questionnaire survey. The aim of the thesis was to explore how horseback riding can be
practised safely during pregnancy and how to ensure effective but safe return to riding
after pregnancy. Another aim was to explore the changes that occur in the body of the
expectant and postpartum woman and their effect on the functionality and performance
of the body during horseback riding. The objective of the thesis was to devise a guide to
safe and appropriate horseback riding during and after pregnancy.
The guide provides mothers with means to practise horseback riding without
endangering their health. It provides information about the changes the body has
undergone and the effects of pregnancy on the body. The exercise library included in the
guide provides ways for additional training to maintain and develop skills needed in
riding, as current research data suggest that riding is not recommended during
pregnancy. An idea for further development is to study the appropriateness,
effectiveness and usability of the presented exercises in the target group.
