Tiivistelmä
Käsite kuuro tulkki on monelle vieras. Kuuron tulkin työnkuva näyttäytyy epäselvänä; millaisia toimeksiantoja kuurolle tulkille voi tarjota ja miten kuuro tulkki suorittaa hänelle annetun työtehtävän. Suomessa AMK-tutkinnon suorittaneita kuuroja tulkkeja työskentelee tämän tutkimuksen tekohetkellä tiettävästi yhdeksän (9).
Tutkimus on syntynyt Kelan asettamista rajoituksista kuuroille tulkeille tarjottaviin toimeksiantoihin sen järjestämissä vammaisten henkilöiden tulkkauspalveluissa. Tutkimuksesta saatavan tiedon toivotaan vaikuttavan Kelan tulevien hankintakilpailutusten reunaehtoihin kuurojen tulkkien osalta. Kelan tulee julkisen vallan edustajana mahdollistaa tasa-arvoisin perustein erilaisille tulkeille jaettavat toimeksiannot sekä monipuolinen kielipalvelujen kirjo eritoten niille asiakkailleen, joiden kielelliset taidot ja vuorovaikutusvalmiudet ovat erityisen hauraat.
Tietoa Suomen kuuroista tulkeista on saatavilla niukasti, joten perusteelliselle tutkimukselle on tarvetta. Työssä käsitellään kuuron tulkin työtilannetta, työnkuvaa ja tulkkausmenetelmiä. Tutkimuksesta saatavien tietojen kautta oman toimialankin tuntemus kuuroista tulkeista lisääntyy.
Opinnäytetyön lähestymistapa on kvalitatiivinen eli laadullinen.
The concept of a deaf interpreter is not common to many; It is unclear of what the deaf interpreters do, what sort of assignments can be offered to the deaf interpreters and how will the assignments take place. There were nine (9) known deaf interpreters working in Finland during this research.
This research started due to the limitations given to the deaf interpreters work assignments by the National Health insurance (NHI/KELA). NHI is responsible for interpreting services for the disabled in Finland. This research and its results are aiming to change the guidelines and conditions for the deaf interpreters in the future tenders of the interpreting services. NHI has the authoritative position regarding the interpreting services. They need to be equal towards all the interpreters and provide multiple language options for their clients, especially for those, whose language and communication skills are fragile.
There is not much information at hand about the deaf interpreters in Finland. Therefore research is needed and focused on deaf interpreters’ work situation, work description and methods. Through the research results the knowledge of the role of the deaf interpreters can be better understood, even for the people already working on the field.
Qualitative methods were used for the research. The variety of the interpreting methods were explained and defined through literature. Most important concepts used were mirror interpreting, relay interpreting and feeder interpreting. A survey was done to determine the current work situation of the deaf interpreters and methods of the interpreting.
Results show that majority of the deaf interpreters work only part-time. They would be willing to take on more assignments if that was possible. Interpreting profession in general is appealing, but the financial insecurity and the uncertainty in the number of assignments given, leads the deaf interpreters to get other jobs instead. Majority of the deaf interpreters who answered the survey have another degree on top of their interpreting degree.
The survey shows that the deaf interpreters are doing multiple interpreting tasks using various methods of interpreting. More clear and updated information about deaf interpreters’ working methods and strengths will benefit both interpreting colleagues and clients. This information is equally important for commissioning parties when organizing an assignment and choosing the most beneficial interpreting and interaction methods for the clients.
