I vår studie deltog 17 respondenter.
The aim of our thesis was to map the prevalence and awareness of compassion fatigue in child protection work and how to prevent compassion fatigue. Our questions at issue: how do you identify compassion fatigue; what are the protective factors that prevents compassion fatigued; what are the largest risk factors for suffering compassion fatigue?
The work has been done in collaboration with a child protection unit in Ostrobothnia and has been designed in collaboration with them. We have applied a quantitative study with a deductive approach, which means our survey is based on previous research on the subject. We have used an online poll as data collection method. 17 respondents participated in our study.
We assumed that compassion fatigue can often be confused with burnout or general mental illness. Therefore, with our survey, we wanted to map the prevalence of compassion fatigue in child protection work. We were particularly interested in the risk factors and preventive efforts.
The results demonstrate that many encountered the concept before but are not sure of its meaning. Through respondents’ responses, we found that there is a risk of the phenomenon in their work, which many people experience as emotionally demanding. This emotionally impact can be difficult to leave when going home from the workplace. The importance and need for a good working environment climate and the opportunity for emotional relief through discussions and support is seen consistently in our investigation. We can also see that these factors are recurring keywords in
preventive work.
