When COVID-19 evolved into a pandemic in the spring of 2020, remote interpreting became a topical issue in the sign language interpretation industry. The amount of remote interpreting rose rapidly, and the interpreters developed good practices and expertise in remote sign language interpretation through trial and error. Since remote interpreting is accomplished in many ways, there is a need to collect good practices from sign language interpreters in order to develop common and established working practices for remote interpreting.
The aim of this thesis was to produce a guide for the remote interpretation of sign language. The research questions were as follows: what are the characteristics, demands and benefits that remote interpreting brings to sign language interpretation and what are the best practices and recommendations for remote interpreting? The theoretical framework contains the history and current state of remote interpreting, particularly how the COVID-19 pandemic affected remote interpreting, and characteristics of remote interpreting.
Best practices in remote interpreting were collected by means of a two-part qualitative study. The study was conducted during the spring of 2021. The first part of the study included a Webropol survey for sign language interpreters. Responses were received from 64 interpreters, corresponding to approximately 10 per cent of those currently active in the industry. The second stage of the study was a collective online discussion on a closed Blogspot platform with 12 participants. In online discussion, the participants collaboratively discussed the different phenomena of remote interpretation under the themes drawn from the knowledge base and the first research phase. The best practices included in the remote interpreting guide were collected from both the survey and the online discussion.
The results of the research and the final product is primarily intended for sign language interpreters and the industry’s service providers. The guide is divided into different themes. Each theme begins with a short theoretical section followed by practical tips, solutions, and suggestions for improvement. For the users of interpreting services, the guide introduces different remote interpreting solutions and good practices for remote interpreting environments. The guide can be of use in the planning and implementation of interpreter education and training and the results can be applied more widely in the field of remote interpreting. Further research is suggested in the form of compiling equivalent remote interpreting guides for speech-to-text interpreting, alternative and augmentative communication, and deaf-blind interpreting.
