The aim of this thesis was to increase coping in volunteering with the help of the effects of nature on well-being. The purpose was to expand the knowledge and skills of volunteer group leaders about nature-based methods together with the effects of nature on well-being. The functional part of this thesis included 5 videos which were aimed at supporting the coping of volunteer group leaders of small social and health associations in the area of North Karelia. These videos contain 5 different exercises based on a Finnish nature-based method called Metsämieli (Forest Mind). With these exercises the group leaders should be able to guide one about an hour-long nature or forest trip by themselves. Exercises can also be used as individual exercises. We are not trained Metsämieli-instructors ourselves, but we have become acquainted with the method through this thesis process. The videos have been published on a YouTube channel and links to videos can be found on appendices.
The thesis was functional, and it was commissioned by Kotikartanoyhdistys ry. The methods of gathering information for the thesis were a participant observation, a group conversation, a thesis diary and a structured interview. According to the feedback we received, the videos serve as a tool for the group leaders and make it easy to become acquainted with the topic. In addition, through the videos, it is possible to get on a nature trip to the nearby nature of Joensuu and at the same time they can serve as a positive advertisement for nearby nature destinations. Based on the feedback, the videos fulfilled their goal to act as an instructor for volunteer group leaders to familiarize themselves with nature-based methods. Moreover, they seem to support group leaders' coping, skills and well-being in volunteering.
