The aim of this thesis was to review how relatives to individuals with substance abuse and/or addicts experienced their own part in the relationship with the addict, how they feel, or felt in the relationship, and whether they believe that they get, or have gotten enough support.
The questions at issue of this thesis are: What Does the term co-dependency mean to a relative and how would they describe a possible co-dependency? How is the relative affected by a possible co- dependency and how does it effect the relationship between the relative and the addict? Has the relatives background and experiences affected their choice of partner? Is the care that is provided for relatives enough and is it visible enough for it’s targeted audience?
The theoretical part describes what substance abuse and addiction is and what the differences of these two terms are, what a co-dependency can look like, what attachment theory is and how it relates to co-dependency, and what kind of support relatives are offered and what it might look like.
This thesis was done in the form of a qualitative interview study where relatives to addicts that would describe themselves as co-dependent were interviewed. The result of this study shows that the definition of the term co-dependency varies from individual to individual, that many relations are affected in a negative manner by this type of relationship, and that the care that is provided for relatives are in many cases inadequate because of the access to service in the client’s native language.
