The purpose of this thesis was to find out how and to what extent subjects related to children’s emergency treatment are taught in emergency care specialisation studies at Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences. The objective of this study was to find out how children’s emergency treatment is organised within the emergency care programme and to find out how the teaching could be standardised and improved.
The topic of this thesis was current and useful as the teaching of children’s emergency treatment within emergency care studies at Finnish universities of applied sciences has not been examined previously.
The research was carried out by using quantitative and qualitative research methods. The Webropol questionnaire used in the research had 10 closed questions and three open-ended questions. The closed questions were analysed statistically by calculating percentages. The open-ended questions and the answers to the questions defining the closed questions were analysed by using inductive content analysis. The questionnaire was sent to all the eight Universities of Applied Sciences that have an emergency care programme. The research received five responses.
The results suggest that the most important subjects in children’s emergency treatment studies are children’s anatomical and physiological features, the most typical illnesses and situations that require emergency care, and the treatment of those illnesses and situations. Children’s emergency treatment studies are organised by combining classroom and online teaching containing both theoretical and simulation instructional scenarios to guarantee the most high-quality teaching. In general, the lecturer in emergency care oversees the teaching of the children’s emergency treatment as the subject is related to emergency care studies. The amount of teaching also varies depending on the importance of the subject. A real child patient in simulations, multiple health care professionals, and video lectures are considered as strengths in teaching. The areas that can be improved upon teaching are the lack of practical training in labour and paediatric ward, and the lack of cooperation among lecturers in emergency care and children’s nursing. The results of this study can be used to standardise and improve the children’s emergency treatment studies in Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland.
