Tiivistelmä
Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli tutkia ja kehittää Länsi-Pirkanmaan seniorikeskuksessa Jyllin Kodilla toteutettavaa Kioski Herkku -toimintaa. Tutkimus toteutettiin Länsi-Pirkanmaan seniorikeskus Jyllin Kodille.
The purpose of the following thesis was to study and develop the Kioski Herkku project implemented at Jyllin Kodit, a home for the aged located in the Western side of the Pirkanmaa region in Finland. The study was conducted on behalf of the institution. The project offered kiosk-themed activities for the elderly residents and was carried out alongside the residents and the professional social and health care workers within the enhanced service housing environment.
The study approach was qualitative, aided by features of constructivist research. The thesis focused on observing the target community’s experiences regarding the activities that Kioski Herkku provided. Its main questions were as follows: does the activity increase participation, does it improve the quality of nursing work, and does it create well-being within the operating environment and culture. Research material was collected in the summer of 2020, via surveys given to three expert groups within the organization, and later examined by method of content analysis.
The expert groups assessed that the Kioski Herkku project succeeded in creating community participation, as well as improving the quality of nursing work and overall well-being within the facility’s setting. Participants considered the activity important, and many agreed that it diversified the opportunities for the elderly residents to engage in the environment around them. It was perceived as having a positive effect on the residents’ ability to function in social situations. Results indicate that when the community is enthusiastic, motivated and there is room for creativity, it can generate brilliant ideas and create social innovations.
When developing new work methods, attention should be paid to the following points: 1) Keeping the resident at the center of the activity; 2) Establishing better communication systems; 3) Creating traditions; 4) Keeping the activity alive. Keeping these aspects in mind during the developmental work ensures the patient’s needs are the focus and allows for their opinion to be heard throughout the process of implementing these methods. Further research could be conducted on how developmental work has progressed and how it reflects in the overall quality of care work. The results could be used to further advance eldercare.
