South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences launched the project “CARVE – Circadian Activity Revitalizing Vocational Energy” in the autumn of 2019. The aim of the project is to promote well-being at work in a comprehensive way at the individual and organizational levels for small businesses in the South Savo region. With the help of wellness technology measurements, models to recognize individual circadian rhythms are developed in the project for job crafting.
The first group of office workers in the Carve project from spring 2020 served as the target group of the thesis. The objective of the thesis was to find out the applicability of the wellness technology Moodmetric smart ring in defining individual circadian rhythm. The energy level of the target group during a five-day period as well as their own estimation of their circadian rhythm were researched. The personal feelings of the target group were compared to the measurement results given by the Moodmetric smart ring. Quantitative methods were used in the study and SPSS Statistics software was used in analyzing the research results.
Based on the measurements and the analysis of the results no statistically significant correlation was detected between the Moodmetric smart ring and circadian rhythm. Consequently, individual circadian rhythms of the target group could not be directly interpreted from the Moodmetric measurements. In total, the results revealed that the respondents had been more positive than the average, their performance and energy levels were considered good and the stress experienced during working days was minor. The majority of the respondents placed their circadian rhythm between the early bird and the night owl. The target group considered their energy level high regardless of the weekday and their energy level stayed almost the same from Monday to Friday.
With the information and research results provided by the thesis, additional information and value may be offered in the Carve project to the participants to support their personal well-being.
