The purpose of this study was to improve the pulp mill's softwood fiber line sand separation. Problems in sand separation caused rapid wear of the process equipment and possible deterioration in the quality of the final product.
The aim of the thesis was to find the optimal control values for the equipment in order to get the sand separation to the desired level. Rapid wear of components, especially cones, caused interruptions in equipment operation, leading to unnecessary production losses. The correct adjustment values were searched for according to the equipment manufacturer's old instructions. However, changes had been made to the equipment which made it impossible to adjust it, for example the necessary measuring equipment had broken down. In order to the equipment to be adjusted, it had to be returned to the state it was in the time of delivery. The correct control values were then sought to ensure the optimal operation of the equipment. The adjustments had to be modified several times to achieve the desired results.
The hardware failure rate decreased after optimization. The operation of the equipment can be further improved, but it requires modifications. The location of the dilution water should be moved to a different location and the dilution liquid should be changed to clean water instead of the current black liquor. The flow rate of the liquid to be fed to the system should be determined by flow measurement. In the event of a fault, if one sand separator fails, the flow could be adjusted to suit the remaining sand separators. Consideration should also be given to moving to cones made of better materials. From removed cones, it can be concluded that the wear was due to poor cone geometry.
