The thesis analyses the author's artistic work for audiences of babies and old people. The thesis demonstrates the method used by the author and her Loiske Ensemble when they create art performances for babies and how their approach can be adapted to old people. As a case example the thesis uses a BabyTango dance performance for babies and old people, and the performances the group had in nursing homes in 2018-2019.
An art performance produced particularly for both babies and old people is uncommon. This type of a performance answers the human need to meet at different ages. Art performances are seldom offered to audiences of babies and old people. The thesis studies the significance of the meetings of different generations in an art performance.
The research material consists of interviews with a senior center instructor who took part in a BabyTango performance, a BabyTango artist, and with a group of old people and families with babies. Also the author's personal experiences, observations and memories from the performances as well as literary sources are used.
The thesis provides us with knowledge of how a dance performance can strengthen the interaction and communication between generations and thus helps to achieve an experience of unity between generations. The thesis shows how a multisensory, speechless and touching art experience may give a way to significant encounters.
The study also provides the Loiske Ensemble with base information for a forthcoming production for babies and old people, a performance called Strong and Tender.
