Tiivistelmä
Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, miten koira-avusteista työskentelyä voisi kehittää Helppi ry:ssä. Tavoitteena oli tuottaa uutta tietoa koira-avusteisesta työskentelystä. Tehtävänä oli kerätä asiakkailta tietoa heidän kokemuksistaan liittyen koirien läsnäoloon. Työ toteutettiin laadullisena tutkimuksena, johon osallistui kuusi Helppi ry:n asiakasta.
The purpose of this study was to investigate client’s experiences of dog-assisted-activity in a substance rehabilitation center, Helppi ry. The goal was to find out, how Helppi ry could improve their dog assisted activities. They offer their services to men only and six of their clients took part in this qualitative research, sharing their experiences and knowledge in a semi-structured interview. The data from the interviews was studied with content analysis.
The most important finding from the results was how the clients experienced the presence of a dog. The presence of a dog and the dog’s altruism was described to relax the atmosphere, make it easier to become acquainted with others and keep the community spirit. It also became clear from the results that a dog could help clients to process their personal feelings. Drawbacks mentioned were possible allergies yet the benefits far out–weighed the disadvantages. Activities were found to be more natural with a dog present, than without. Interviewees would like the dog’s nature to be suitable for the work and activities in the rehabilitation centre. In connection to developing dog-assisted activities, clients wished that there would be more common and interactive activities.
Dog-assisted activities among substance abuse rehabilitation clients has not been studied in Finland before. In considering further studies, it would be interesting to know what kind of results could be achieved among female clients or from a client group of mixed gender. During this study it was noticed that the clients thought more about their own rehabilitation and responsibilities when the dog was present. We would like to suggest further studies to investigate the experiences and possibilities that were presented.
